Day 10 - Wednesday
21 Sept Nuremberg 24 degrees
Wake up to a generally clear (some fog) sunny morning. A
little cool but promises to be a beautiful day. We are now on the Main-Danube
canal. A man made canal that joins the Rhine and the Danube. It was only opened
in 1992. We now go down in the locks whereas on the Danube we were going up. We
have a talk on the operation of the locks. The three largest locks drop us a
total of 75 metres as we head towards the Rhine. We stop at Nuremberg in the German state of Bavaria. After lunch and are shown some of the Nazi
sites including where the Nazi rallies were held and then on to the castle which along with 90% of the town was destroyed by
bombing. The castle was rebuilt in 2 years and the town in 20 years. The girls
go off for a shop in the town while we head back to the Pearl for a pre dinner
tasting of some Bavarian beers. We taste 4 different styles, a light beer
(calories not alcohol), a pilsner, a dark beer and a wheat beer. Did not like
the wheat beer tasted of bananas. Sat at our usual table for dinner with our regular waiter - Norbit. All the girls want to take him home to marry off!

After going through the largest lock on the Rhine and a talk about the locks, we have a Bavarian lunch of sausage and beer.
Our guide today is a young historian, Peter, who made comment that the youth of today confronts the Nazi past, accepting the consequences.
Visited Nuremberg castle and saw the many houses that were rebuilt after the bombing, which were on a bit of a lean. These houses were rebuilt by the women of Nuremberg and built on the existing foundations.
We visited Hitlers propaganda backdrops, such as the Nazi colosseum, the Zeppelin arena where Hitler held his large staged rallies. It was interesting , as you recognised the buildings and structures as ones seen in many a documentary.
Had a beer at the Nuremberg bratwurst restaurant and spoke with some University students.
We shopped in the local market in the town square and John bought a bratwurst but declined the bottle of coca cola offered ( he was to regret this later)
Back on board the Pearl, we had a beer tasting and we were serenaded by Gloria’s husband on the piano. We have been enjoying his sojourns on it.
Yes, us girls were all secretly plotting to marry-off Norbert,.
