Day 9 - Tuesday
20 Sept Regensburg Cloudy 18 degrees
Sleep in this morning as no tours until 10am.
Day is cool and cloudy but no rain. We arrive at Regensburg at 10.30. Very
pretty town pop 150,000. The first settlements in Regensburg date to the stone age! Around 90 AD the romans built a small fort in what would now be the suburbs. Our guide is Sigi and once again very knowledgeable
and informative. The town has history back to the Romans. Cobblestone streets,
narrow and medieval structures. The Stone Bridge was built 1135-1146. Another magnificent cathedral. We lunch at the
oldest restaurant in Regensburg which was established when the Romans built the
stone arch bridge over the Danube. Traditional sausage, sauerkraut and beer. We
get back to the ship just before 3 pm for the cuckoo clock demonstration. Oops
we missed it! We continue on cruising down the river and pass through more locks. It is a very busy river. Another fantastic dinner and lots of wine. Ann had an entree of tomato and mozzarella stack with balsamic glaze and pesto and rocket. After dinner back to Karen and Ross's for photo on bed!

Although cloudy, it is not raining in Regensburg. It is a beautifully kept medieval town, with its quirky buildings and murals and cobbled narrow streets. The stone bridge is the longest stone bridge in Europe, built by the Romans. Our guide, siggy, was very funny but informative. He gave the history from Roman time through to Germanic tribe takeover. Lunch of sauasage and beer went down well, coffee and cake from a little cafe around the corner was also nice. The coffee was made up in big copper vats, like mini beer brewing vats. Strolled the streets and did some shopping, this town has lots of lovely shops.
Sorry to have missed the cuckoo clocks (yeah, right!)
Sailed away during dinner, heading to Nuremberg. Passed mad Ludwig,s folly (the Valhalla he built to honour noted Germans) modelled on the Parthenon and built in the middle of nowhere facing the Danube.
After dinner we took our “Bob,Ted etc” bed shot.
